The bread cost about $1 at regular price and less when on sale. It is an easy was to make one’s own herb-butter bread and freeze for eating instead of buying garlic bread. The butter cost about $4 /lb in some grocery stores here. Where the same stores put it on sale for less than $ 2, I generally stock up for the year. I store them in the freezer.Butter spread made with vegetable oil is generally cheaper than butter made from milk. I purchase butter made with milk and I purchased the salted one because the unsalted butter has an addictive used to flavor it.

Ingredients:

2 Sticks of Butter at room temperature or softened

1 Tbsp chopped Fresh Wild Thyme (Thymus serpyllum)

2 French Bread (14 oz each)

Directions:

In a two-cup bowl add the butter. Add the chopped thyme. Using a spoon, mix together.

Slice the bread lengthwise on both sides. Cut each side into three or four.

Butter generously inside and the cut side. Put the pieces inside the bag the bread came from. Tie the bag. Allow the bread to be loose in the bag.

Put the bag in the freezer.

Alternatively, cut the bread crosswise 1.5 in thick. With a spoon or table knife spread the herb butter on top and bottom of each piece. Put them in the bread’s bag and tie. Allow the pieces to be loose. Freeze.

To serve:

Preheat the oven at 400 degrees F.

Lay the frozen herb bread  in a single layer on a baking dish. Cast iron baking pan is preferred.

Bake for 6 minutes. Turn the bread if the bottom is buttered as well and bake for another 6 minutes or until the buttered sides are crusty. Take the pan out of the oven.
