How to save money on groceries while building up your food supply a little by little. By taking advantages of sales, we lower our grocery budget without lowering our food quality.
Update 11-15-2025: In 2025, we raised our grocery budget to $500 for our family or 5 including 2 adults and 3 kids from 9 years old to 15 years old. In August 2025, we increased it again to $600. With the price increase and to spend less time writing grocery list every month, we set $600 and drafted a grocery list divided by 2 (even month grocery list and odd month grocery list). We can just shop the same list every month. The list was drafted with regular price which increased our grocery budget. $600 budget includes $355 grocery staples (Around $265 for shelf staples, $45 for vegetables, $45 for cleaning products), $150 for meat, and $95 for fruit.
We are a family of 5 and our grocery budget is $375 a month. Often time I feed a household of 6 or 7 with the same budget. When I spend less than $375 a month, I save the remaining of our grocery budget in an envelope to purchase food staple and consumables for my food pantry as well as to purchase clothes and shoes for the kids, and to celebrate birthdays and holidays. Our budget of $375 includes food budget of $200, fruit budget of $80, and meat budget of $95 a month. The food budget of $200 is used to purchase food staples, consumables like toilet paper, and cleaning supplies like borax, vinegar, washing soda, and baking soda. The food budget also is used to purchase clothes and shoes for the kids, and seeds for the garden. Sometimes money saved from the fruit budget might supplement the food budget but in general, I keep each budget separate and save what was not spent in each category separate envelopes.
