On Sunday June 16, 2019, my husband, the kids, and I did our grocery shopping. We shopped sales and few items for Father’s day celebration. We received the ads in the mail during the week and after comparing prices we made the following purchase.
Sales:
8 for $1 Yellow corn (Fresh Thyme): $11
$0.98/ LB. Red Seedless Grapes (Hy-Vee): $23.78
Regular grocery shopping:
Triple choc Cake (Aldi): $3.49
4 Qt. Cookies Ice Cream (Aldi): $4.19
1% Gallon Milk (Aldi): $2.01
Total $23.78 on fruit and $20.69 on Food
Sweet corn at Fresh Thyme Store: 8 yellow corns for $1
We purchased $11. The store had a limit of 8. I gave cash to the kids and each one of us made two separate transactions and I made a total of three transactions. We saved a total of $33.00.
At home after cooking lunch, I removed the corn of the cobs without blanching first. I filled each freezer gallon bag with 8 corns. I filled 10 gallon zip bags and stored in the freezer. I processed 8 corns at a time. I removed the husk of 8 corns, removed the corns of the cop and filled a zip bag then put it in the freezer. Then I repeated the process until I process 80 corns.
The last 8 corns that I processed, I put the corn in a pot, add sugar, water and bring to a boil.
Then I added flour mixed with water. I boiled the corn for few minutes to make creamed corn and served aside of stir fried chicken and homemade corn bread for dinner. It was Father’s day so I served dinner with triple chocolate cake and ice cream purchased at Aldi. Sweet corn is a vegetable and I like to stock up on it in summer for winter use.
Grapes: $0.98/ Lb.
We purchased $23.78 worth of grapes. That was 24.26 Lbs.
I rinsed some in vinegar water for few minutes and stored in the fridge for kids’ snack.
I used some of the grapes along with apple from prior sales, greens from the garden, and hard boiled eggs to make salad for lunch which I served my family with taco shells and tostadas.
We have a lot of grapes in the fridge for snack during the week. So far I spent $120.30 in food and $94.96 in fruit for the month of June. That is a total of $215.55.
My husband enjoyed his father’s Day without us going to the restaurant. We purchased the cake he likes and ice cream and it was a nice dinner. I didn’t go over my budget.
