If you cannot find flour, rice, oatmeal at your grocery store at the moment, check Honeyville
If you are on a low budget with no emergency funds, whether or not there is an outbreak like in the case of Corona virus, severe weather, or a loss of job,
There are basic staples you should stock up little by little to have 3 months’ worth of food supply on hand. Food is need. Build your food supply on budget year around.
Have a list of staples you cook with and go buy them:
Basic Staples to stock up in emergency or unexpected event: Emergency Food Supply would vary based on the emergency but these are the basics.
- Rice, bean, potatoes, pasta, oatmeal, corn meal, and wheat flour are shelf staples.
- Meat and greens are freezer staples.
- Cooking oil like peanut oil for cooking and frying if you are not allergic to peanut and extra virgin olive oil for fresh eating and cooking but not frying. Â They are also shelf staples.
- Popcorn kernel, roasted peanut are great snacks and self-staples.
If you have to stay home for some days out of precaution, it is worth having the main staples necessary to cook for your family without going to public places like restaurant and grocery stores.
It is not wise to have only 3 days of food at home. I think it is not enough. Start building your food supplies this spring so that by the end of fall you build 3 months of food supply at home.
You don’t need to have a pantry to stock up on food. I have turned my linen closet into a pantry and school closet for the kids.
I store some items in my basement and some in the kitchen cabinets. Invest in a chest freezer to stock up on meat from summer to fall and freezer stable vegetables in summer. I still have sweet corn in my freezer as of March 2020 that we purchased in summer 2019 at 6 ears for $1.
Many grocery stores are running out of some products due to the Corona virus outbreak. Let’s make it a habit to stock up for more than 3 days whether there is an outbreak or not.
Check Honeyville, if you are out of flour and grains and cannot find any at your grocery store at this moment.
