A garden tour on 5-15-22 shows us that you can grow some fruit trees in your backyard if you like to eat fruit in order to save money in groceries over time.
You should do search to find fruit trees hardy to your garden zone and not prone to disease. You should list fruits you and your family like to purchase to see if their trees are hardy to your zone. That is a starting point.
Some fruit trees like apple may not do well if you have black walnut on your property. You should do your search to find out how far you should plant such fruit tree for your walnut trees and fruit trees to plant close to the nut tree.
Nut is expensive. You could search nut you like to purchase to see if that is something you could grow on your property.
Fruit trees we planted in our backyard that are still growing include:
Ashmeads Kernal Apple (M. pumila)
Goumi tree sweet scarlet (Eleagnus multiflora)
4 varieties of blueberries including Brunswick Lowbush Blueberry a wild blueberry (Vaccinium augustifolium))
Sunflower Paw Paw (Asimina triloba)
Mango Paw Paw
2 black berry varieties (Chester and triple crown black berries)
2 raspberries (Caroline and Polka red)
Meader Persimmon (Diospyrus virginiana)
Kuganskaya Russian Quince (Cydonia oblonga)
Smyrna Quince (Cydonia oblonga)
Reliance Peach (Amygdalus persica)
Polly Peach (A. persica)
Rainier Cherry (Prunus cerasus)
Montmorency Pie Cherry (Prunus cerasus)
Viking Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa)
Rosa Rugosa Alba
Strawberries
Alpine strawberries
Some fruit trees were purchased once and propagated throughout the years. The mother plants are in the front yard. Few examples include:
Black currants- Black September (Ribes rubrum)
Seeded concord grape (Vitis labrusca)
If you have deer in your neighborhood, you might need to fence your fruit trees. Deer and bunnies tend to damage young trees.
If you live in your own home and have some yard you could grow some fruit trees, you could plant few. They are low maintenance. Once they start producing, you would be able to save money for not buying some fruit from the grocery store and use that saving toward grocery items you don’t grow. Your grocery budget may not change even if grocery prices increase.
How to Grow your Own Fruit Trees to Save Money on Groceries
The video is a garden tour to share fruit trees we are growing with the goals to lower our fruit budget over time.
Online fruit tree nurseries
A nursery I purchased fruit trees from is Burnt Ridge Nursery. They share information on health benefits of fruits on their website (https://www.burntridgenursery.com/).
The second nursery I have purchased from is One Green World Nursery (https://onegreenworld.com/) a little pricier, gives an idea on how tall the fruit trees they sell can grow and the maximum of fruit they can produce when they reach maturity as well as how long it takes for the trees to start producing.
