We have a food pantry, but the shelves are not supported by strong anchors. I purchased Gladiator shelve units to store my grocery staples and canned jars.
How to convert a linen closet into pantry?
If you don’t have a pantry to store your grocery staples but you have a linen closet outside of the bathroom, move your bed sheets and towels to 1 or 2 of 30-35 gallons plastic tote. Any excess linen could be donated to downsize your linen.
Now that the linen closet is empty, you could use it to organize and store your grocery shelf staples.
Use Garage shelving units as pantry
If you don’t have a food pantry, you could purchase heavy duty utility shelving units to organize and store your food supply. I would recommend Gladiator steel heavy duty utility shelving units. They are strong and can hold thousands of pounds of products depending on the type you purchased.
Few years ago, I canned food and stored them on shelves in our pantry and one day some of the anchors supporting the shelves fell and many of my canning jars felt. I purchased Gladiator shelves to create a food pantry in our basement to store my canning jars and some of our grocery staples.
I like gladiator steel heavy duty garage shelving units as they are strong. For some of them, the bottom shelf can be set high making it easy to clean the floor under the shelf and to avoid water damage in case of basement flooding if the water level is less than 1 foot high. You can locate the ones we use in our affiliate resource page here.
Declutter your kitchen cabinet
You can declutter your kitchen cabinet to free space to store some grocery supplies. If you have too many dishes you don’t use, you could donate some of them or resell them online like on eBay for instance, to recoup some money and free space. The list of marketplaces we sell on can be found on our resource page here. You can choose the one you like better.
I use some kitchen cabinet drawer to hold chocolate chips I purchase during holidays when on sale and stock up for 1 year supply.
How to simplify your grocery staples?
List grocery staples you cook with. Try to have only one variety for each staple. That will decrease the number of grocery staples to purchase as you don’t need to always carry multiple varieties of one staple at all times.
For instance, if you purchase salad dressing, you don’t need multiple brands and multiple flavors. Find one that works well for you and use it for all your dishes that call for salad dressing.
To save money, you could purchase the raw staples and make your own salad dressing or vinaigrette. You might even have these ingredients on your grocery list.
For example, we don’t have salad dressing or mayonnaise on our grocery list. We purchase milk and oil. We have kefir cultures in the refrigerator. When we feed the cultures, I drain the fermented milk kefir and store it in the refrigerator for probiotic drink or to make salad dressing. You could check our wild salad article for kefir dressing here.
By simplifying your grocery staples, you may not need a lot of space to store your grocery staples.
Cook from scratch
When you cook from scratch, you don’t need a lot of staples on hand. You save money by purchasing basic staples as they cost less than the processed ones.
For instance, if you purchase potatoes to stock up, you save money. You could make potatoes edges instead of buying frozen French fries. You could make potato soup, mashed potatoes. You can make multiples potato dishes when you have whole potatoes in stock. Further, 10 lbs. bag of potatoes could cost you about half of what you will pay for 5 of 2 lbs. bags of frozen French fries.
Another example is instead of purchasing frozen chopped stir fry vegetables, you could purchase carrot on sales, peel and chop or grate and freeze. You purchase broccoli and cauliflower and prep them and freeze. You will have your own stir fry vegetables or frozen vegetables you could use in soup, stir fry, and more dishes.
When you cook from scratch, you save money and you don’t need a lot of grocery staples on hand. You also can build your food supply of these staples quicker and don’t need a lot of space to store your food supply.
