How to build your food supply on budget
On November 13, 2022, my husband shopped our groceries.
We set a budget of $300 for November groceries for our family of 5.
We purchased meat on November 5th and purchased our grocery staples on the 13th.
Our $300 grocery budget includes $150 for food and non-food, $60 for fruit, and $90 for meat.
I created a grocery list and estimated to spend no more than $120. I allocated $20 for milk and bread, and $20 for kids’ school snacks.
I also estimate to spend $10 on meat including shrimp and eggs.
I included some fruit for $20.
The food cost $130, the meat cost $11, and the fruit $19.
In addition to the regular shopping, my husband went to another grocery store to purchase butter and apple that were on sale.
He took $5 from food budget for 2lbs of butter and $45 to purchase apple.
Apple was on sale for $1.49/lb. or 50% off.
In the past we stocked up on apple when it was on sale for $0.99/lb.
With the inflation, sales price this year was not as low as before.
If you have a land to plant some fruit trees, it might be a good idea to plant some fruit we eat that are hardy to your zone.
Some fruit trees when mature can yield hundreds of pounds of fruit you can freeze and can for your winter use. That could save you some grocery money.
In the past Potato can be on sale in fall for $0.99/5lbs bag.
We have not seen it at that low price this year to stock up. We purchased 10lbs bag for $4.88 when on sale. Aldi regular price is $4.79 for 10lbs bags. It used to about a little less than $4.
I planned on purchasing 10lbs bag of potatoes and some frozen French Fries as well.
The French fries cost $2.98/2lbs bag. We fry 3 bags for our household.
To make potato wedges for our household, I backed 10lbs bag of potato.
3 bags of French fries cost $8.94 while 10lbs bag of potato costs $4.88 or $4.79 depending on the store.
It is cost effective to make Fries on holidays and make potato wedges during the week.
If you set a budget for your groceries and would like to spend within that budget, you might have to purchase some of your grocery staples that go on sale, when they are on sale and purchase more than what you need right away to save some money to spend on the rest of your grocery staples you won’t find on sale.
If you find your grocery expense, go over your grocery budget months after months, it might be a good idea to revise your grocery budget to a level that is more appropriate for your household spending level.
If you know you set a good grocery budget and still you go over it, sometimes then it might be a good idea to plan and save some money from your grocery budget every month to stock up on your grocery staples that go on sale.
Few ways that help us keep our grocery expenses below our grocery budget:
- We stock up on staples that go on sale.
- We plan not to spend all the grocery budget every month.
- We draft a grocery list that will cost less than our grocery budget.
That way if we forget a staple, we could purchase it during the month. If a staple goes on sale, we will be able to pull our grocery saving to purchase enough to stock up.
- We cook from scratch and reduce the number of food staples to have on our food pantry.
- We grow some greens so that we don’t have to purchase a lot of greens.
- We grow perennial herbs and spices so that we don’t need to purchase a lot of spices or herbs from the grocery store.
- We planted fruit trees, but high yield fruit trees are not matured enough to start producing. Although you harvest a lot of berries during the growing season.
- We harvest edible wild greens in our garden for eating and cooking which increases the quantity of greens our garden provides us.
You work hard to earn your money. See how you can set a budget for your groceries so that you spend less in that category and save money. When you spend less than you make at your job, you can either invest in a side business, or in the stock market, or rental properties, or all the 3 to overtime create multiple streams of income where you do not trade your time to make money.
