If you have a small business on the side and have other obligations including taking care of your house and children as well as having a job, it might be challenging to find enough time to work in your business. If you like a routine, you can plan your week and allocate your available time to tasks you like to perform in your business. Below are a few steps that can be helpful when planning your week.
1-Have a weekly calendar
If you like routine, you can create a weekly calendar for your business activities.
A weekly calendar could include the departments in your business you want to work in during the week and the functions you want to perform in each department.
You can set your weekly calendar to be fixed and only needs a few updates or revisions when you change plans. You don’t need to update your calendar daily or weekly. It could be set for the year, and you repeat the same thing every week.
2-Blog time
Once you draft your weekly calendar by business departments and main functions, you can see how many how in a day you have available to allocate to your business as a blog of time.
That could require waking up early before the kids if you are a morning person or going to bed late if you are a nighttime person.
Don’t forget the small amount of time you might have available during the day, like 30 minutes here and there for instance. Some small tasks can be scheduled to be performed around this time.
When you spend an extended period performing one task, you can be productive as you zone in. Whenever you can, plan to perform the same task within the time you assign it to be able to accomplish a lot related to that task. For instance, if you have multiple content categories you create content for, if you plan to write a blog article for specific content within a time frame, when you are done with that article, and have time you can write an article for another content on that same topic if you have one that will require an article. Having already submerged with the knowledge related to the topic, it is more productive to write a second article related to the same topic than to switch topic and write for another completely different topic category. An example is writing articles on how to create thumbnails template and how to plan 1 year content calendar vs writing articles on how to create thumbnails and how to swing trade stocks.
How to create thumbnails template and how to plan 1 year content calendar are in the same content topic category.
While how to create thumbnail and how to swing trade stocks are 2 different content topic categories: content creation category and finance category.
3-Create tasks list
List the different tasks you perform under each department in your business.
This allows you to know what you do in your business and what needs to be done in your business.
Some tasks might be frequently performed while some might be seasonal.
4-Allocate time to each task
For frequently performed tasks, estimate how much on average it takes you to perform these tasks.
Allocate enough time to each task.
Add these tasks to your weekly calendar.
Organize and assign tasks spots in your calendar
Arrange your business tasks based on time allocated to them and based on your available time.
Tasks that require a quiet environment to perform like recording video content, schedule these tasks for time of the day you can have quiet moment in your house to perform them whether early in the morning or late at night for instance.
Take advance of your days off as well. If you have a full-time job and request a day off or during holidays, plan in advance. See what was scheduled for that day and see if you can do more of that to be ahead in that task or department. Work on your business around your household duties and obligations.
5-Allocate space to each task on your calendar
For other tasks you can perform in a somewhat noisy or busy environment like editing videos for instance that can be performed around kids, assign them spots in your schedule when your family is around to free quiet time for tasks that require it.
For tasks that require attention to detail, or your critical thinking, schedule them for time of the day you are at full energy capacity like early in your schedule.
For tasks that can be performed without much thinking, schedule them around time of the day you are exhausted or at the end of the day.
By the time you follow these steps to organize your business tasks and your available working time of the week, you would have created your weekly calendar.
6-Periodically update your weekly calendar to align with your natural routine
As you work in your business periodically check your weekly calendar to see if you naturally perform these tasks listed in your calendar the day you scheduled them or if you developed a different routine that seems more enjoyable and productive for you. You could then update the calendar to include the new routine.
Conclusion: How to plan your week as a small business owner?
