If you would like to lower your grocery expenses and control what is in your food by cooking from scratch, you can make sourdough started within 2 weeks with only 2 ingredients: unbleached all-purpose flour and tap water. With the sourdough starter, you can make sourdough pizza, sourdough bread, and sourdough crouton.
If you live in warmer climate or during summertime, the process could be less than 14 days. If you live in colder climate or in wintertime, the process could take longer. We started this sourdough started in winter especially, November 27, 2022, in the US agriculture zone 5A. The process took less than 14 days.
The video shows the sourdough starter on day 5 of the process.
Once the sourdough starter double in size, you could store it in the fridge and feed half of it once a week. You let it rise for 24 hours on the counter after you fed it and put it back in the fridge for another week. You use the other half of the starter to bake bread or pizza.
How to feed sourdough starter?
To feed sourdough starter, stir the sourdough starter. Scoop ½ cup of sourdough starter and transfer to a clean jar. Add ½ cup of tap water at room temperature to the sourdough starter in the clean jar. Add 1 cup of all-purpose unbleached flour to the mixture. Stir well for about 1 minutes to combine all 3 ingredients. Scrap the sides of the jar.
Having the water at the bottom and the flour on top allows you to stir the mixture well without having flour left at the bottom of the jar.
