You can design 1 pant pattern and 1 sleeve blouse pattern, 1 Cami pattern, and 1 sleeveless top pattern for you work wardrobe. By changing the neckline, collar, and sleeve, you can make multiple different blouses using the same sleeve blouse pattern.
You can design and sew your own work wardrobe using the following steps:
Narrow down the style
Pick few fabric fibers and fabric types to sew.
Choose the color combination you are interested in that allows you to pair tops and pants multiple ways.
Draft your own pattern.
Sew and try it on.
Take note of what to improve and redesign the pattern to sew and try it on again. Repeat the process until you are satisfied with the outfit. You make design a pattern you can sew multiple variations from.
For instance, tops I would like to sew for my work wardrobe include long sleeve blouse, Cami, sleeveless top, and jacket. For pants I picked and designed elastic waist straight leg pant.
I picked 100% cotton fabric fiber to learn to sew garments.
Among cotton fabric, I chose few fabrics to sew with including quilting cotton, flannel, and twill. I purchased double gauze, broadcloth, poplin, and corduroy to try to sew to narrow down fabrics I would like to use for our garment sewing.
As an adult with a lot of responsibilities, to learn to sew, you can pick one or few skills at a time to learn. I design patterns and sew garments with no dart, no zipper, no button, no buttonholes at the moment.
I sew blouses using quilting cotton, cutting the pattern on bias. The blouse is designed to be loose and comfortable but not boxy when cut in bias.
I designed 1 pant pattern, and it is elastic waist pants to wear to work.
Design multiple outfits from 1 pattern
With one main pattern, you can make multiple small variations outfits from it.
For instance, you design 1 sleeve blouse pattern. You design 1 sleeve pattern for it. From there you can retrace the sleeve pattern to make variations if you are interested in other types of sleeves like bell sleeves for instance. You can add elastic at the wrist of the long sleeve for some blouse and no elastic for others.
Collars: You can pick few collars you like and draft their patterns for your blouse pattern. Collars could include pleated collar, peter pan collar, or convertible collar for example.
By changing the neckline, collar, and sleeve, you can make multiple different blouses using the same blouse pattern.
With the same blouse pattern, you can trace it to design another blouse pattern with yoke, or empire waist blouse.
Cami: With one Cami pattern, you can sew multiple Camis using different fabrics. You can color block. You can use the Cami with your jackets or cardigans.
Sleeveless top: You can design 1 or 2 sleeveless top patterns and use them to sew sleeveless tops you can wear with your jackets or cardigans.
You can also wear your sleeveless tops and or Camis under your sleeve blouses.
