You can apply for an IRS IRIS TCC account so your business can file Form 1099 online for free.
You begin on IRS.gov, search for 1099, and use the IRIS filing option. IRIS is free and doesn’t require software, unlike the FIRE system designed for software developers. If you currently use paid software to file 1099s, IRIS is a cost‑saving alternative.
A PDF guide is available and helpful, but it doesn’t clearly explain what to do when more than one responsible officer must sign the application.
Application Steps
- Sign in through ID.me to reach the IRS e‑Services area.
- Choose Individual, start a New Application, and select TCC 1099 (IRIS).
- Enter the business EIN and all required business information.
- Choose your role.
- Transmitter works if you’re filing for multiple businesses or on behalf of another business.

Use this if you are filing for multiple businesses or as a third‑party.
- Select Portal instead of A2A unless you already have compatible software.
- Add responsible officers, contacts, and delegates and enter their required personal details.
Signature Process
After the application is created, it shows as pending signatures. Each responsible officer must log in through their own ID.me account and enter their own PIN to complete their signature.
A second officer follows the same process: log in, click Individual, open the existing application, review it, and sign using their PIN.
Once all required signatures are complete, the application is submitted for review. The IRS mails the TCC number, often sooner than expected.
Final Notes
The IRIS filing portal is not always available, especially in late December. Once the portal opens, you can log in and file 1099s directly through the IRIS system.
