On November 5th, 2022, my husband took our grocery budget out as cash. We budget $300 a month for groceries for our family of 5.

The $300 grocery budget includes $150 for food staples and non-food, $60 for fruit, and $90 for meat.

The day before, I reminded my husband to take some fruit money remaining from prior month and purchased some meat. When he takes grocery money out for November, we will return the fruit money back. He decided to go to the bank and withdraw the grocery budget for the month of November before doing the grocery shopping.

We have not drafted the grocery list for our monthly grocery shopping. However, there was ground beef on sale for $2.49/lb. for 10lbs tube and we decided to purchase a tube. I also requested he purchase 2 bags of chicken 10 lbs. each, 1 family pack hot dog, 2 of 1-lb ground pork, and 4 of 18-pack eggs.

I planned to put the 10 lbs. ground beef in the freezer.

The remaining meat and eggs would be to have enough meat for the week.

I served hard boiled eggs for breakfast to the children during the week and they liked it. 2 hard-boiled eggs each were not enough for them but 3 were fine. Therefore 3 kids 3 eggs each few days a week, it is good to have 3 of 18-paks eggs in the fridge. Also, once a week I cook chocolate sheet pancake and use 6 eggs. Therefore, we will have enough for that dinner meal as well.

We are low in meat in our freezer. Even though I didn’t expect the chicken, hot dog, eggs, pork to be on sale, I wanted to purchase them to make sure we have enough meat in stock for the week at least.

My husband checked their prices at Walmart where we planned to purchase them from, but he decided to go to Aldi to compare the price. At Aldi, a 10lb. bag chicken was on sale for $5.99/lb., and they have 2 bags left. The 10 lbs. bag of chicken cost a little over $8 at Walmart. He purchased them at Aldi. Ground pork was a penny cheaper at Walmart. He didn’t purchase the pork and might purchase it the next day.

He purchased the hot dog for a little less than $4.

He made a stop at a meat grocery store Fareway and noticed pork steak was on sale for $1.99/lb. as well as pork shoulder roast for $1.99/lb. He purchased 10 pork steaks and 1 pork roast.

He purchased 10lbs ground beef.

From the meat grocery budget of $90, we spent $70 on these purchases.

We put the remaining $20 on the side for meat in case during the month we need to purchase more meat at full price or there is a sale, and we can stock up.

When you want to lower your grocery expenses, you might have to do a little planning and try not to spend all your budget upfront. That way if you forget a grocery item or there is a sale during the month, you will be able to stock up without allocating additional funds to your grocery budget.

To be able to make your grocery expenses a fixed expense, it is a good idea to take cash out for your grocery expenses. That way, every month you take the same amount out for groceries. When at the end of the month you have some money left from your grocery budget, you put that aside for it to accumulate and you can then use that money to stock up your food pantry, fridge, and freezer when food staples you cook with are on sale.

To keep your grocery expenses low, grocery items you use, that can go on sale, it is good to purchase them on sale to save money you can then in turn use to purchase your grocery items that don’t go on sale.

When you shop for groceries, you can purchase a few extra groceries staples you use often in your house. Over time, you will build your food supply on budget and have a few months of grocery staples on hand. It is far easier to do that than saving a few months of your income for emergencies.

Little by little building up about 3-6 months of food supply is one basic need you don’t have to worry about when finances are tight.
