When to record a business depreciable asset?
When you purchased a depreciable asset to use in your business, as soon as your online purchase is processed, save a copy of the order in your business receipt folder.
Record the purchase in your business expense detail spreadsheet.
If possible, record the depreciable item in your depreciable worksheet or depreciation Excel spreadsheet. If you didn’t record it, as soon as you receive the product, record the asset in the depreciation spreadsheet.
Update the sheet again once you put the item together and ready to be used. That is the date you placed it in service. Record that date in your depreciation spreadsheet.
Having your recordkeeping up to date allows you to have you’re the information related to your assets placed in service during the year in one spot ready for you to calculate the depreciation deduction. You will not forget to depreciate an asset you purchased or when you purchased it or when you placed it in service.
Once you unbox the item, if there is a receipt in the box, file it in your long-term asset folder to keep two types of record for your depreciable assets.
How to record a depreciable asset?
You need to record:
- The date of purchase
- The name of the product
- The cost including sales tax and shipping minus any discount.
- The date the product is placed in service which is the date it is ready to be used in your business.
- The cost of the product could also be recorded in your business expense spreadsheet to track all your expenses together as well.
