During the second week of June, We purchased grape on sale at Aldi for $15.52 at $0.89/lb. That was 17.44 lbs. of grapes. Milk was also on sale at Hy-Vee grocery store for $0.97/ half gallon. We purchased 2 half gallons of whole milk and 2 half gallons of 2%. The 2% half gallon originally cost $2.27 and the whole milk cost $2.42/ half gallon. We also purchased 4 bags of French steak rolls for $2.39 each. It costs originally $3.98 and I like to have them in the freezer for sandwich meals.
I used what we purchased on sale in my meals.
I used one bag of the steak rolls for meat ball sandwich on a week night.
I used most of the whole milk to make kefir. My kids like to drink it. I keep the kefir cultures in the fridge in milk and feed them once or twice a month when I have excess milk close to expire or milk is on sale. The cultures ferment the milk even in the fridge but slowly. I drain the milk to serve and add more milk. Kefir, herbal tea (made with herbs from my garden), and water are the only beverages I serve my family. My kids use milk for cereal in the morning.
Sunday 6-9-19, I made egg, greens, and fruit salad for lunch. The salad included fruit purchased on sale (grapes, peaches, pears, and apples), our home grown food and edible weeds (dandelion leaves, garlic mustard, creeping Charlie, sorrel, arugula, kale, strawberries, and honeyberry), hard boiled eggs, and tostadas.
In the evening of the same day, I made sourdough pizza from scratch and served fruit salad for dessert. The fruit salad included peach, pear, and grapes. I added some sugar as the green grape was sour. My family loved it and the kids ate a lot of it. I rinsed grapes and dipped in vinegar water for few minutes before I drained. I kept a big bowl of the ready to eat grapes in the fridge for the kids’ snack during the week. On Monday evening I made fruit salad again as dessert after dinner. We finished the pears and peaches both purchased during a prior sale, and are down to one bag of grapes, a big bowl of ready to eat grape, and apples in the fridge.
On Tuesday, we might receive the ads for the week. As you can see my kids eat a lot of fruit. I like to have a specific budget for fruit and save the remaining balance when all is not spent in a month.
In winter, there is not a lot of fruit on sale, we save more our fruit budget and in summer when fruit is on sale we stay within our budget. In fall when fruit is on sale like apple, we go over budget and use the saved fruit money to stock up and fill our fridge with apples.
