Do you plan to start a new garden in spring? Are you afraid of gardening because of your busy schedule? Do you plan to grow some organic vegetables and save some money? You can start a new garden right on your lawn.

The successful way I have started a new garden on lawn without tilling was by mulching with wood chips or hay. I have been gardening since 2014 and tried different methods but the style that works best for my busy schedule and my gardening style is mulching with free wood chips, free fall leaves, or paid hay. The one that I prefer the most among all three is wood chips.

If you like potatoes or would like to plant potatoes, peas, and or onion bulb in spring, you can plant them the same day you cover your lawn with mulch.

You can get wood chips from your city. You need to call them early and ask if they deliver otherwise, you could haul it home. If it is not a possibility, you might check on Craigslist and purchase hay from a farmer. Most of them would deliver for a fee.

In spring lay the mulch on the grass to cover it completely. Move the mulch from where you want to plant and put one whole potato down and cover back with the mulch.

To plant peas, and onion bulb, move the mulch from where you want to put one seed or one bulb. Put the bulb or the pea seed on the grass and cover with the mulch lightly. Once the seeds sprout, move more mulch to cover the base of the seedlings.

After one month, the grass would start to die down. The grass would be a nitrogen source and source of energy for the organisms in the ground which would work to break down the mulch (carbon rich element).

By summer time, your ground would be so moist easy for you to dig holes and plant beans, cucumber, and squash seeds. As for tomatoes and peppers, it would be a good idea to start them indoor or purchase plant at your local plant nurseries. You could purchase heirloom tomato seeds or plants so that you could save your own seeds and not purchase tomato seeds the next season.

During the season, avoid spreading your lawn. In fall you rack your fall leaves and mulch your garden for free.

Small seeds might be hard to plant in mulch. If you want to plant some small seeds the first year, you might have to wait for the grass to die down, move the mulch to the side and plant the seeds. Once they sprouted, you would be able to move the mulch back gradually. But they are more work. Your best bet would be to target big seeds or bulbs the first year you started to grow on lawn.

The second year the mulch would break down a little for you to sow small seeds. You still might need to pull the mulch apart and sow the seeds and move the mulch back after they sprout.

By the third year, you would be able to scatter small seeds right on top of your mulch without moving them apart.

Mulching your garden, allows you to start your season without tilling.

  • It also keeps your soil moist enough that you won’t have to water your garden
  • It saves you time and money.
  • Finally, mulching your garden fertilizes it and saves you money on fertilizers and compost. Mulching is composting on the spot. You don’t need to purchase compost bin or turn your compost regularly. You can add your food scraps right on top of your mulch. They break down very fast.

Feed organisms in your ground by mulching your garden and let your garden would feed you.
