How to start your own garden to save money on groceries?

You can plant some perennial herbs that are hardy in your zone. Over time, you do not purchase some spices and herbs from the grocery store. The money you save from not purchasing spices and herbs could go toward other grocery staples you do not grow. Even though grocery prices go up, your grocery budget could remain the same.

One perennial herb hardy to our zone 5a is winter savory (Satureja montana).

It has been growing in our garden since 2014.

Winter savory, also called mountain savory, is easy to propagate.

Is winter savory invasive?

Winter savory is not invasive. It expands over time but only grows it the area you plant it.

I let it go to flower. But I don’t see it spreading around the garden.

How to propagate winter savory?

You can propagate winter savory through cutting.

You can cut one year old stem or this year growth and dip the bottom few inches of the stem in moist soil. The bottom tip of the stem will root. This year stem root easily. This year’s stem is green and the previous year’s stem is brown.

Will winter savory survive winter?

Yes, winter savory is a perennial herb for Zone 5A. It is very hardy in zone 5A. It stays green well through late fall. It comes back in spring and starts to grow new leaves.

The herb becomes woody after a few years. You could continue to propagate every year to increase your spice and herbs patch and have young plants at different stages of life in your herb garden.

It is not necessary to cut the woody stems off.

I let them be and in spring the new growth appears on the brown stems. Old branches that didn’t have new growth in the current year can be trimmed sometimes in summer if desired.

Winter savory uses.

You can harvest winter savory leaves to season your sauce.

You can make herb butter. You chop the leaves, mix with room temperature butter and transfer to a jar and freeze.

You can use the herb butter on bread to make herb bread the same way you will make garlic bread.

You can make herb oil. Mix the chopped leaves to cooking oil and store in a glass jar and freeze. That can be drizzled on baked meat during winter. You just need to take the herb oil out of the freezer and keep it in the fridge a day prior to using.

You can dry winter savory as well if you prefer dry herbs.

You can start your own garden to save money on groceries. You plant a sustainable garden. You plant once and you just propagate from the plants you have in your garden. Over time you will have enough of some plants and stop buying some grocery staples they replace in your cooking thus saving money to allocate toward other grocery staples you don’t grow.

Winter savory is a cooking and medicinal herb. Although, I mostly cook with it. I added it to herbal tea only a few times in the past during cold season.
