Growing garlic as a perennial

If you want to start a garden to save money in groceries, garlic is one spices you can plant in your garden if it is hardy to your zone.

In our garden zone 5A we have soft neck and hard neck garlic and grow them as perennials.

When is the best time to plant garlic bulbils?

You can plant garlic bulbils right after you harvest them.

From early August, you could start checking the bulbils to see if they are ready to fall off the head.

If you want to plant them in a specific part of your garden, you might need to harvest the bulbils and replant. Otherwise, over time they will fall and scatter around the mother plant and grow there.

When to harvest garlic bulbils?

Hard neck garlic bulbils are ready to harvest when you noticed two of the following:

  • First, the skin covering the bulbils will peel off the bulbils.

How do you harvest garlic bulbils?

To harvest hard neck garlic bulbils, hold a container or a small box under the bulbils head. Gently rub the bulbils clump between your fingers. If they are ready to pull apart, they easily pull apart and you can collect them in the container or box you place below your bulbils.

When the skin or membrane that is covering the bulbils is still covering them, the bulbils are not ready to harvest.

When the skill is off the bulbils, but the bulbils are not easy to pull apart when you rub them between your fingers, they are not ready to harvest.

It is good to plant them in fall at the latest or in late summer right after you harvest the bulbils.

The nursery you purchased the mother bulbs from might have an estimated time they recommend you plant that garlic variety. You could follow the same time frame for the garlic bulbils if you prefer.

Are garlic leaves edible?

Garlic leaves are edible. You can use them in your cooking. If you want to grow garlic as a perennial, you could use the leaves in your cooking as seasoning and let the garlic bulbs grow and produce garlic bulbils for you to replant and expand your garlic patch overtime. From that point you can start harvesting some garlic bulbs to use in your cooking.

Garlic is a root spice as well as horseradish (Armoracia rusticana).

Because I plant garlic as perennials in my garden and it grow back year after year, I harvest the garlic leaves to spice my cooking.

You can expand your garlic patch quickly when you grow hard neck garlic. You can let them go to seed and harvest the bulbils to replant to expand your garlic patch in your garden. You save money by not having to buy garlic bulbs to replant every year. Overtime, you will expand your garlic patch enough to stop buying garlic from the grocery store for your cooking.

Grow garlic as perennial to save money in groceries.

Garlic may not cost a lot of money, but that is one more spice you can cross off your grocery list. That money saved can be used to purchase other food staples you do not grow. Grocery prices go up year after year. By growing some food on your own property, you can keep your grocery budget the same and allocate money saved to purchase food staples you do not grow.

I planted my garlics in 2015. They are still in the garden keep coming back every year.

At the start, I harvested them in late summer and replanted in October.

Over the years, I noticed they do just fine when left alone in the ground. They start to grow in fall when the time is right for them. I don’t need to be in the cold replanting them. Also, If I want to move some garlic bulbs to a specific area of the garden, as soon as I harvest either the bulbs or the bulbils, I replant them right away and let them grow when they are ready to do so.

No need to time when to plant garlic in fall. They know nature more than I do and they start growing in fall when the weather starts cooling down.

I just mulch in fall with fall leaves.

Where to purchase your garlic bulbs for planting?

I purchased my garlic bulbs in 2015 online from Richters Nursery and Peacefull Valley Farms.

You can use garlic bulbs and garlic leaves in your cooking. I also use them with honey to make cold syrup for cold season.

Hard neck garlics are easy to find in the garden when you are ready to propagate them. You can let the bulbils be ready to harvest to replant.

Soft neck garlics blend in with mulch and not easy to locate if you do not harvest them on time. The soft neck variety (Polish White soft neck garlic) I planted in our garden is ready to harvest around June or by mid-July. It grows big bulbils few inches above the ground that can be replanted as well.

Is garlic medicinal?

Garlic is known as medicinal. Some are known to contain a high amount allicin for their antibiotic properties. For that reason, I purchased and planted Siberian hard neck garlic (Allium sativum ophioscordon).

I also planted Music hard neck garlic and Polish White soft neck garlic.
