You can harvest black currants in July in zone 5a.

It was July 31, 2022, when we harvested back currants in our garden.

Black currants (Ribes rubrum) are ripe after red and white currant varieties we have in our garden.

The black currant (Black September) we planted was purchased from Burnt Ridge nurseries online.

Black currant shrub can be propagated easily. In spring we can prune the shrubs and cut the branches 1 foot tall and put in a wet dirt where you want them to grow. They will root and grow to start fruiting after 3 years.

Black currants have small seeds inside that you can eat.

The shrub expands as it matures.

That is one fruit shrubs we planted with the goal to reduce our fruit purchases from the grocery store overtime.

Black currants taste like unripe mango to me.

You can pick the black currants off the tree. Then you remove the small stems off the berries top.

You can rinse the berries and put them in a freezer back to freeze.

I like to use ours in winter. During cold season, I can add some in mint herbal tea after I serve the tea.

Black currant is sour which means it could be contain vitamin C. That is the reason I like to use it in winter to help with cold.
